“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.”

Tom Robinson, the black man Atticus defended, is proven guilty for raping a white woman. This is when Scout realizes that a white man’s word will always carry more weight than a black man’s and the sad part is that the only difference is in the skin color. The people of the town follow the saying above because they will do anything to make people believe what they think they see and hear. Scout realizes she has been following this same pattern when she is saved by “the crazy man down the street.” She learns to listen hard to the things that are said and only go by the facts of life.
